About us

Trans Autonomija is a trans rights and mutual support association founded at the end of 2021. The idea to establish the organization arose while organizing various LGBTQ+ community events – Vilnius Pride 2020, Kaunas Pride 2021, Demonstruokimės, commemorations of the Trans Day of Remembrance, etc. We feel the need to unite the community of trans people and allies in Lithuania, educate the public and be heard on issues of our own rights.

Our principles:

🔹 Self determination – we have the right to define our own identities and freely make decisions related to our lives. Each of us is the most reliable witness of our own experience and no one else – neither a psychiatrist, nor a member of the Parliament, nor a father, nor a priest, nor the President – can decide for us who we are or what is best for us.

🔹 Bodily autonomy – the bodies of trans people are not the property of the state. Our bodies belong to us, and we can make decisions about our bodies ourselves. We are often forced to know more about trans healthcare than the doctors who are supposed to provide it. Medical transition services and procedures must be accessible to all, freely chosen, and based on an informed consent model.

🔹 Dignity – we should not have to beg for our rights or prove that we deserve the right to exist. We do not beg, we demand what is ours. We demand the right for everyone to choose the name they want and a fast, transparent, accessible legal gender recognition process based on the principle of self determination for everyone – trans women, trans men, nonbinary people. And in the long run – the possibility of not indicating gender on personal documents.

🔹 Solidarity – we organize not only to improve our personal situation. In our activities, we emphasize solidarity not only within LGBTQ+ communities, but also with other movements for human rights and collective liberation. As long as the most marginalized people in this system suffer, we cannot say that we have made any progress. We must act for a better future and a better life for all.

🔹 Depathologization – our identities are not a pathology.
